Do you use to buy ready-made tahini paste? Get your blender out! It is time to make it yourself. And guaranteed, the taste will be 100% better than store-bought.
Tahini is vegan, gluten-free and so easy to make. It is a simple blend of roasted sesame seeds and oil. With its nutty taste, it is one of the basic ingredients for dishes like hummus. And we all love good hummus, right?
Which sesame seeds should I use?
While tahini can be made from unhulled, sprouted and hulled sesame seeds, we prefer to use hulled sesame seeds for tahini. (But you can also just use the ones that you have at home).
Should I use a blender or a food processor to make tahini?
We prefer using a food processor as it has more power in most cases. But if you have a strong blender it should be no problem using also a blender.
How do I make homemade Tahini from scratch?
Ingredients
- 1 cup of sesame seeds
- 2-3 tbsp oil
- salt
Tools
- food processor or blender
- clean jar with lid
Three ingredients and three easy steps:
- Toast the sesame – Add them in a dry saucepan and stir them on medium-low heat until the seeds get a darker color and become fragrant. (If you ask yourself why you should do this: toasting the sesame seeds gives a far superior taste).
- Blend the sesame – Add the roasted seeds in your food processor and blend them until the paste becomes crumbly.
- Add a few tablespoons of oil – Blend the sesame crumble together with a few spoons of oil until the paste becomes smooth. (Feel free to add some salt at this point).

How long can I store homemade tahini?
You can keep the tahini in the fridge for about a month, maybe even longer. Make sure that the tahini is properly stored in a clean glass and covered.
It might happen that the tahini separates after some time in the fridge. But no worries, this is a natural process, just quickly stir it before using it and it will be as before.
